RIDERLESS HORSE RACES IN THE STREES OF ITALY
Riderless horse races in the public streets were
at one time fairly common in Italy. The best
known event of this kind took place in the Corso
at Rome, but similar races were run at Siena and
other towns. Small banners were fixed to the
girths of the horses, and, to further excite the
unfortunate animals, metal. balls (spiked like spurs)
were attached to their gay coloured trappings. The
Streets were sanded on these occasions and cross
roads walled off with boards or canvas. On account
of the cruelty involved, and the inevitable incon-
venience and danger, these races were abolished in
the latter part of the 19th century.
