Pre-Owned  Two months after President James Garfield was shot by an assassin he died and his Vice President Chester A. Auther became the 21st. President. This was in September of 1881. Arthur who had strong ties with the political machine in New York struggled with that reputation. But apparently realizing that he wasn't just serving New York, but the entire country he appeared to take on his role as President with sincerity. He became a champion of civil service reform and it was during his administration that the first general Federal Immigration Law was enacted. The country went through a relatively good time during his Presidency. A year after becoming President he found that he was suffering from a fatal kidney disease. He kept that secret at first and went on to serve until March 4, 1884. Due to his ill health he didn't push hard to be elected and Cover Cleveland succeeded him. He passed away the following year in 1886, he was just 57 years old. This Souvenir Matchbook was put out by Diamond Match in the 1940s. A whole Presidential series was issued from Washington to Franklin Roosevelt. Another Presidential series was put out in the 1970s, but this one is far superior. FULL MATCHBOOK. No creasing on the Saddle.
