On any steeple-chase course there<br>must be at least twelve fences in the first two miles,<br>two of which must have a ditch 6ft. wide on the<br>take-off side, and there must also be a water jump<br>at least 12 feet wide either left open or guarded with<br>a fence not exceeding 3 feet in height. This repre-<br>sents the minimum of obstacles allowable, there<br>are often more.<br>The Grand National course is 4 miles 856 yards,<br>There are 30 fences of a severer nature and more<br>varied character than those found on a 'Park<br>Course.'
